Ode to a Six-year-old...
Author : Rick Schneider
October 22, 2006
They crack you open like an egg.
Your tiny heart has holes in it.
They cut you open, and I bleed.

I love you, Bridget, more than life.
I would gladly trade my years for yours.
The waiting cuts me like a knife,
To see what horror next occurs.

The pain gets worse each passing year.
Your wounds heal better than my own.
You seem to understand my fear,
Of being left here, all alone.

I have to wait all by myself.
My illness bans me from the room.
And so I see my precious elf,
Adrift. My God! Is that her tomb?

It's been four times now, and the news
Has all been good. And yet my soul
Has still not overcome the bruise.
Not knowing when exacts its toll.

You are my hero. I will love you forever.
NOTE: You can see above, Bridget at her school standing by herself against a wall, watching the other kids run and play. A little girl who Bridget had not met before, who probably knows something about being regarded as "different" came over and took her hand.
... In her way, Bridget is an ambassador for peace.
